AMA Saving the Oceans thanks everybody from the community who helped to clean up El Medano beach in Baja California Sur

Through AMA Saving the Oceans, Sonia Falcone made an appeal to join forces to clean up El Medano beach in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, on 24th August 2020.

Tons of waste was thrown across the beaches of Baja California Sur in the wake of Hurricane Genevieve which made it crucial to alert the community to help clean up – El Medano beach especially.

“Unfortunately, this situation is generated by a serious social problem derived from irregular settlements on the river banks, where people throw all kinds of waste which ends up in the sea, which could instead be recycled”, comments Sonia Falcone, President of AMA Saving the Oceans.

In August 2019 the Law of Ecological Balance and Environmental Protection (Ley de Equilibrio Ecológico y de Protection al Medio Ambiente) came into force, prohibiting the use of plastic straws, plastic bags and polystyrene. The problem of contamination produced by these items persists, although it is decreasing thanks to the existing programs which offer a solution with the support of society and associations like those which unite for this cause, which even make use of biodegradable bags for the recollection of rubbish. Gianmarco Vela, head of Canirac (the National Chamber of the Industry of Restaurants and Spiced Foods in Los Cabos), is one of the most fervent defenders of this law which is progressing very well.

Over a hundred people arrived at El Medano beach, including friends of AMA Foundation, relatives and municipal workers and from Cabo Villas Beach Resort & Spa, who took up the task of picking up the tons of waste deposited on the beaches in the passing of the hurricane.

“Between us we have collected tons of plastic waste especially, but in addition we had to remove branches and tree trunks for the machinery provided by the hotel Cabo Villas to be able to enter and to leave the beach completely clean. “We live these natural phenomenons year after year in Baja California Sur and it is normal that the remnants reach the coasts. Nevertheless, one of the goals of our Foundation is to educate in order to generate more awareness in society in general, including within businesses, showing business owners programs like recycling and teaching them that waste is not going to disappear, but will instead transform, so it really depends on us what ends up in the municipal bins and not in the rivers”, concluded Sonia Falcone.

The Foundation AMA Saving the Oceans, in the voice of its founder, thanked everybody who answered this call to make the beaches safe and attractive again because the population depends upon having a clean city, not just because Los Cabos is a destination dependent on tourism, but also for the sake of living healthily.
