5 OUT OF 45 SEA LIONS RESCUED FROM SHARP FISHING MESH LEFT AT SEA : APPEAL TO RESCUE THE REST

Thanks to AMA’s generous supporters like you, since November Cabet Cultura y Ambiente and their sealion rescue program Rescate de Lobos Marinos have now managed to disentangle 5 of the 45 sea lions who are trapped underwater in the same long segment of discarded fishing mesh left at sea, near the island of San Jorge, in Sonora.

Many of these creatures have deep lesions around their necks where sharp fishing mesh wires have become embedded. These wires as well as netting and other materials which have intruded into their flesh must be cut away, often leaving deep wounds and raw bloody flesh that must be disinfected. It takes a whole team of highly specialised vets and other experts to carry out such careful and important work. Sea lions are often brought to the boat in gentle nets and then on to either in a bigger boat or on the sea shore where the team carefully attends to them. Sometimes a rifle with a dart have to be used to medicate the bigger sea lions who cannot escape the mesh underwater so need to relax and breath and be assisted in the sea before they can be brought to the boat in the net. Once rogue materials have been removed and wounds have been disinfected sea lions can be returned to their favourite places and companions. Some of those treated need to be tagged with a transmitter in the dart or a simple green tag and a wax crayon symbol so the team can track their progress.

PLEASE continue to support these incredible rescue efforts. There remain approximately another 40 sea lions of all ages and both genders which URGENTLY need to be released from the same fishing mesh discarded under water. Follow their progress on Instagram (ama_saving_the_oceans or restate_lobos_marinos). Our goal at AMA is to help the team release ALL of the 45 that were found trapped in November. We desperately need your help. Your contributions make all the difference.
PLEASE SUPPORT US so these majestic creatures can swim free and continue to breed their pups.
A rescue expedition to disentangle up to 18 sea lions costs USD $35,000.

USD $10,000 pays for the team to rescue 5. USD $2,000 is the cost to rescue 1.

And whoever donates the most to a single expedition gets to name and adopt all the sea lions rescued!

LET’S HELP THE TEAM RELEASE ALL 45. PLEASE SEE OUR “SUPPORT US” PAGE FOR DONATION DETAILS. THANK YOU.
